The Machame Route is the most scenic and strategically designed path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its gradual acclimatization profile and dramatic landscape transitions, it offers one of the highest success rates on the mountain.
This 7-day program allows proper altitude adaptation while guiding you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally the Arctic summit zone at 5,895 meters.
Morning transfer from Arusha/Moshi to Machame Gate
National Park registration and expedition briefing
Guided rainforest ascent
Flora and wildlife interpretation walk
Camp orientation and altitude briefing
Machame Gate (1,490m) to Machame Camp (2,980m)
Hiking: 5–7 hours | 11 km | Montane Forest
After breakfast at your hotel, you transfer to Machame Gate for registration and final expedition briefing. Once permits are cleared, the climb begins through dense tropical rainforest.
The trail ascends steadily beneath towering trees draped in moss. The air is humid, rich with birdsong, and occasionally you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys in the canopy.
By late afternoon, you reach Machame Camp, just above the treeline.
Ridge ascent with panoramic viewpoints
Photography stops overlooking Shira Plateau
Botanical identification of giant heathers
Afternoon acclimatization walk
Machame Camp (2,980m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)
Hiking: 4–6 hours | 5 km | Heath & Moorland
Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs a rocky ridge into open moorland. Vegetation shifts to giant heathers and dramatic volcanic rock formations.
As you reach the Shira Plateau, expansive views open across one of the world’s highest plateaus. The scale of Kilimanjaro becomes fully apparent.
The shorter hiking day supports acclimatization.
High-altitude ascent to Lava Tower (4,630m)
Lunch at Lava Tower for acclimatization exposure
Geological interpretation of volcanic formations
Descent into Barranco Valley
Shira Camp (3,840m) to Lava Tower (4,630m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Hiking: 6–8 hours | 10 km | Alpine Desert
Today is critical for altitude adaptation.
You climb gradually to Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, where you stop for lunch. This “climb high” exposure strengthens acclimatization before descending into Barranco Valley.
Barranco Camp sits beneath the imposing Great Barranco Wall, with dramatic views of the Western Breach.
Early ascent of the Great Barranco Wall
Ridge-top panoramic photography
Valley traverses and controlled descent
Afternoon acclimatization and rest
Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Hiking: 3–5 hours | 5 km | Alpine Desert
The day begins with the ascent of the Great Barranco Wall ,a steep but non-technical scramble. It is one of the most memorable sections of the entire route.
From the top, sweeping views stretch across valleys and glaciers. The trail then undulates through alpine terrain before descending to Karanga Camp.
This shorter stage continues acclimatization without significant net elevation gain.
Steady ascent to summit base camp
Summit strategy briefing
Early dinner and hydration protocol
Gear check and final preparation
Early rest before midnight ascent
Karanga Camp (3,995m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Hiking: 3–5 hours | 4 km | Alpine Desert
A steady climb brings you to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. The landscape is stark and windswept, with dramatic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
The afternoon is dedicated to rest, hydration, and summit preparation. An early dinner is served before you sleep for a few hours ahead of the midnight ascent.
Midnight summit departure
Steep ascent to Stella Point (5,756m)
Sunrise viewing over East Africa
Final ridge traverse to Uhuru Peak
Glacier observation (Rebmann & Furtwängler)
Controlled descent to Barafu for rest
Continued descent to Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,080m)
Hiking: 12–16 hours total | 16 km | Arctic Zone to Rainforest
Shortly before midnight, you begin the summit push under a sky filled with stars.
The climb to Stella Point (5,756m) is steep and demanding. As dawn breaks over the African plains, you continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. the highest point on the continent.
Standing at 5,895 meters is an emotional and unforgettable achievement.
After photos and celebration, you descend carefully back to Barafu for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp in the rainforest zone.
Final rainforest descent
Crew appreciation ceremony
Certificate presentation at Mweka Gate
Transfer to Arusha or Moshi
Mweka Camp (3,080m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m)
Hiking: 3–4 hours | 10 km | Rainforest
The final descent winds through lush rainforest terrain. At Mweka Gate, you receive your official summit certificate:
Gold Certificate – Uhuru Peak
Green Certificate – Stella Point
After farewell celebrations with your crew, you transfer back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a well-earned shower and celebration dinner.
