TOUR DESCRIPTION

Explore with us the Ndutu wildebeest migration Safari embark on a long-distance migration that coincides with the annual rainfall patterns and grass growth. Following the short rainy season in November, the herds of wildebeest arrive on the short-grass plains of the Serengeti around November. The short-grass plains are located in the area east and south of the Seronera, around Ndutu, and the northern Ngorongoro Conservation area.

Herds of wildebeest and zebra can be seen across these plains as they feed on the nutrient-rich grasses. The majority of the wildebeest calve around February. They normally stay in the area till April and then start moving west towards the Western Corridor of the Serengeti National Park.

What is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is the largest herd movement of animals on the planet. In fact, with up to 1,000 animals per km², the great columns of wildebeest can be seen from space.

The numbers are astonishing: over 1,2 million wildebeest and 300 000 zebra along with topi and other gazelle move in a constant cycle through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of nutritious grass and water. Guided by survival instinct, each wildebeest will cover 800 to 1,000km on its individual journey along age-old migration routes. Hungry predators – lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, wild dog, and crocs – make sure only the strongest survive.

It is thought that rainfall over 50km away can trigger the start of the mass movement – perhaps through smell or the recognition of thunder and lightning on the horizon. The circuit takes the animals from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (although not into the Crater itself) in the south of the Serengeti in Tanzania, up through the Serengeti, and cross into the Masai Mara in Kenya, and back again.

The journey is beset with danger: young calves are snatched by predators, the slow is brought down by a pride of lions, brave beasts break legs on Steep River slopes, crocodiles take their share of the stragglers, and the weak and exhausted drown.

When to see the Great Migration

There is no single ‘migration season’ as the Great Migration is, in fact, an eternal annual cycle from place to place, year in and year out.  However, depending on either the aspect of the Great Migration you want to witness (such as river crossings) or the time of year that you would like to travel, your safari can be tailored to give you the best chance of seeing what you desire.

Whether the great herds are calving in the south or on the move north in search of greener pastures – and then back again – there is a huge variety of astounding scenes unfolding before you.

January – March: The Calving Continues

The herds congregate on the short grass plains of the southern Serengeti and westernmost regions of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. An estimated 500 000 calves are born during a two- to the three-week window in February. This mass calving draws a staggering number of predators eager to prey on vulnerable newborns.

Early morning after breakfast, we depart to Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti is truly spectacular. It is famous for its vast open grasslands which allow for excellent sightings of wildlife.

The Serengeti is Tanzania’s oldest National Park and it is also one of the oldest ecosystems on earth.  Its climate and vegetation have remained largely untouched for millions of years. Whilst the Serengeti boasts abundant wildlife, it is perhaps best known for the annual Great Migration.

Vast numbers of wildebeest; accompanied by large numbers of zebra and antelope move in an annual pattern, constantly seeking fresh grazing.  The precise timing of the Migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year.

After Lunch and an extensive game drive, we head for our Tented partner lodges for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: Full Day Serengeti Park

Breakfast at around 0800am. Proceed with morning and afternoon game drives in the Serengeti with a lunch and leisure break at the lodge in the midafternoon. The term Serengeti means endless plains in the Masai language. In the central plains, there are carnivores like leopard, lion, hyena, and cheetah. This park is normally the scene of the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra that occurs between the Kenyan Mara and the Serengeti. Varied bird species can be seen here including eagles, ducks, geese, egrets, vultures, secretary birds, ibis, stork, herons, kites, pelicans, cranes, and guinea fowl.

The Serengeti National park is arguably the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world with over 3 million large mammals. About 35 species of plains animals can be seen there including the “big 5” - elephants, Rhino, Lion, Leopard, and Buffalo. Other common species found here include hippo, giraffe, eland, impala and other antelope types, baboons, monkeys, and a profusion of over 500 species of birds. In May or early June, huge herds of wildebeest, gazelle, and zebra begin their annual spectacular migration northwards. In their wake follow predators, lions, and cheetahs, and wild dogs with vultures circling overhead! Come back to the Lodge for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4&5: Serengeti National Park –Ndutu

South Serengeti National Park (Ndutu area) for Calving

Lake Ndutu is situated in the Ngorongoro conservation area, part of the southern Serengeti eco-system. Lake Ndutu is alkaline, like most of the other Rift lakes, however, the water is still drinkable and used by a wide array of local wildlife.

The majority of the wildebeest migration can normally be found on the short-grass plains from December to April. The area is usually heavily populated with elephants, birds, and resident games.

After Lunch and an extensive game drive, we head for our tented partner lodges for dinner and overnight.

You will spend 2 nights at Ndutu.
